The geomembrane manufacturing process is so interesting. It is one of several items included in geosynthetic products. In particular, this product is used as a coating material or layer.

Then, it can separate two types of objects or materials that are then not planned to not mix immediately. Geomembrane at first glance resembles a thin plywood or flat with a black color.

However, if you see it closer, it has elastic properties and can follow the location or place of installation. The thickness also varies from the lowest thickness of 0.30mm to the highest thickness of 3.00mm.

The Geomembrane Manufacturing Process 

Since Geomembrane has some different thicknesses, you can suit them to the needs of field use and the required requirements. This product is divided into some types based on the different materials. 

There are some materials used to make this item ranging from high and low-density Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Ethylene. Basically, it is a thin or low-permeability synthetic membrane. 

Overall, the process of making use the geotechnical engineering. Commonly, this product is made from continuous polymeric sheets. However, they can be also made from geotextiles and other materials. 

The geomembrane manufacturing process starts with making the raw materials. These include the polymer resin and several additives such as plasticizers, antioxidants, carbon black, fillers, and lubricants 

These raw materials (also called the “formulation”) are processed into sheets. These sheets come in various thicknesses and widths.

This process is done by calendering, extrusion, or spread coating. That is the common process that is done by a manufacturer.

The Differences between a Geotextile and Geomembrane 

Based on the geomembrane manufacturing process explanation above, you may maybe curious about the differences between Geomembrane and geotextiles. 

Both are actually using geotechnical materials and also the waterproof ones. The similarities are quite much, but below are the differences between those two things. 

1.     The Different in Performance 

Geomembrane is produced from high-density polyethylene. It is commonly used to prevent any seepage. Meanwhile, geotextile is made of a material called the non-woven fabric. 

In a project, you may use both of them to create a stronger reinforcement. The anti-seepage function will be better too. Furthermore, geotextile is made of synthetic fibers through a weaving or needle-punching process. 

2.     The Use

The geomembrane manufacturing process will show the use of this material in general. Geomembrane is plastic film that is applied in several areas such as:

  • Landfill (bottom coating and cover)
  • Toxic waste ponds (even for B3 waste)
  • Clean water pool (suitable for consumption)
  • Oil &; Gas (mud pit)
  • Mining (leach pad, tailings, water reservoir, sediment pond, etc.)
  • Biogas Catcher
  • Shrimp/fish farm
  • Salt ponds And reservoirs, etc

Elsewhere, geotextile is commonly used in water conservancy, railway, road, large building, soil & water conservation, and so on. So, you should understand their characteristic better. 

3.     Water Permeability 

Geotextile is usually permeable and Geomembrane is impermeable. Geotextile is designed to make the water still able to go through its pores. 

Meanwhile, the Geomembrane will not make water go through its particles. That is why; the geomembrane manufacturing process must be done properly so that this material can do its function.
